In recent times, it is has been known and put down that there are two Rhodes Scholarships given from Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, or Palestine every year. The Scholarships for SJLP were declared in 2016 and the first Scholars arrived in October 2017.

The Rhodes Scholarship program is the oldest (established 1903) international scholarship program in the world, and one of the most prestigious. Administered by the Rhodes Trust in Oxford, the program offers 100 fully-funded Scholarships each year for postgraduate study at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom – one of the world’s leading universities. Rhodes Scholarships are for young leaders of outstanding intellect and character who are motivated to engage with global challenges, committed to the service of others, and show promise of becoming value-driven, principled leaders for the world’s future.

Fully Funded Rhodes Scholarships

The basic tenure of the Scholarship is two years, subject always to satisfactory academic performance and personal conduct. In certain cases, at the discretion of the Academic Committee of the Rhodes Trust and the Rhodes Trustees, Scholars may apply for the third year of Scholarship to complete the DPhil.

Scholarship Benefits

  • A Rhodes Scholarship covers All University and College fees; the University application fee; a living stipend (£15,144 per annum 2018-19).
    In addition, one economy class airfare to Oxford at the start of the scholarship and one economy flight back to the student’s home country at the conclusion of the scholarship.

Scholarship Eligibilities

  • Nationality/citizenship: You must be Syrian, Jordanian, Lebanese, or Palestinian or you must be a legal permanent/temporary resident in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, or Palestine.
  • Education/residency: You must have received at least 5 years of education in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon, the West Bank, Gaza, or Israel.
  • Age: Upon 1 October in the year in which you are applying, you must meet either of the below criteria:
    — You must be at least 18 and have not reached your 24th birthday (i.e. you must have been born after 1 October 1996 and on or before 1 October 2002).OR (for older candidates who completed their first undergraduate degree later than usual)
    — You must have not reached your 27th birthday (i.e. have been born after 1 October 1993) and EITHER you have met or will meet the requirements for completion of your first undergraduate degree on or after 1 October 2019 OR the national context led to disruptions throughout your undergraduate education, thereby prolonging the time needed to complete your degree.
    * A university’s policy determines the date a degree is considered awarded. In ambiguous cases, the decision of the National Secretary is final.
    ** These will be considered on a case by case basis, you should be in touch with the National Secretary if in doubt.
  • Academic achievement: You must have completed (or will have completed by 30 June 2021) an undergraduate degree from a college or university (normally a Bachelor’s degree) to a sufficiently high standard to be admitted to postgraduate study at the University of Oxford. In this respect, please note carefully the requirements for your chosen course at Oxford.
  • English Language: You must have a sufficiently high standard of English and have met -by the application deadline the English language proficiency requirements for IELTS /TOEFL
    If unsuccessful in your first application to the Rhodes Scholarships, you may subsequently re-apply only once more (and this must be in the same constituency), subject to meeting the eligibility criteria.

Application Process

  2. You must submit your application online, with all supporting documents, by 23:59 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), 31 August 2020.
  3. In preparation for making your application, you should read carefully the general information, particularly that held on the Scholarships tab, on the Rhodes website, the Conditions of Tenure for the Rhodes Scholarship, the information in this document and the graduate admissions pages of the University of Oxford: www.ox.ac.uk/admissions/graduate.
  4. Longlisted candidates might be invited to attend a Skype preliminary interview in early October.
  5. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to social engagement (a reception and dinner the evening before the interviews) and a final interview. You must be available to attend both, in person.
    1. Note: exceptions to in-person interviews can be considered for Syrian and Gazan candidates in difficult circumstances.
  6. All applicants will be emailed with the outcome of their application

You must submit a completed application form online with the documents and information detailed below. All documents must be submitted in English, or with English translations included. Please note that, if you are invited to interview, you will be asked to bring the originals of all documents with you:

  • Your birth certificate confirming that you meet the age criterion.
  • A copy of a valid passport.
  • An official transcript from the college or university at which you are studying.
  • A certified copy of your high school marks/high school graduation certificate.
  • Evidence of English Language Proficiency.
  • A full curriculum vitae.
  • A head-and-shoulders color photograph (jpg format).
  • A personal statement of no more than 1,000 words.
